The Cowan Community Center welcomes and gladly accepts donations or gifts that support the work we do:
The Cowan Creek Mountain Music School & Scholarship Program, and Passing the Pick & Bow, an afterschool banjo, fiddle & guitar program at Cowan Elementary School.
Passing the Pick & Bow began as a partnership between the Letcher County School System and Appalshop, bringing music to the four elementary schools in the county; we have received funding in the past from the Kentucky Arts Council to continue providing this program to Cowan Elementary School. The program provides group and one-on-one instruction in learning to play either the fiddle, banjo, or guitar and is offered two afternoons each week.
It is a shared belief that programs of this nature have two very positive outcomes: students will achieve greater academic success, and they will less likely become involved in the serious problem of drug abuse that is so prevalent in this county and in the area.
This is the music that has the power to (re)connect communities, to connect children with their heritage, to a sense of place.
