The Cowan Community Center welcomes and gladly accepts donations or gifts that support the work we do such as the production of the annual Cowan Creek Mountain Music School, and the After-School Program known as Passing the Pick & Bow. All of our work is supported through grants or donations.

The Letcher County School System and Appalshop have partnered together offering After-School Pick & Bow Program into four Letcher County Schools.  Cowan Community Action Group, Inc. received funding thru June 2010 from the Kentucky Arts Council to continue providing this program to Cowan Elementary School. This program provides group and one-on-one instruction in learning to play either the fiddle, banjo, or guitar and is offered two afternoons each week.

The school system has been so impressed with what we have done in the four schools that they have initiated the search to help secure funding so that this program  can expanded.  It is a shared belief that involvement with programs of this nature will have two very positive outcomes:  students will achieve greater academic success, and they will less likely become involved in the serious problem of drug abuse that is so prevalent in this county and in the area.

Cowan Community Action Group, Inc.

The Cowan Community Action Group is a nonprofit, tax-exempt community service organization which serves children and families in an economically distressed area of east Kentucky. Our mission is to provide educational and cultural experiences for the entire community. At the Cowan Community Center, we operate a year-round program of after-school activities, music classes, day camps and tutoring for low income and at-risk youth. In 1964, the Cowan Community Action Group established a community center in an abandoned schoolhouse. The Center's programs are directed by the Cowan Community Action Group which continues to be made up of local volunteers who are deeply invested in providing a positive, safe environment for their own and their neighbors' children.
